About Marcfrei.net
This domain stands for my own server machine at home. This is a brand new (as of Nov. 2007) machine with GNU Linux installed on it. Many servers are running on this host (as well as NAT, firewall etc..) and despite a slow ADSL (3500 kbps downstream / 300 kbps upstream) connection, are available from outside my own network. Note that due to use of DHCP, the external IP of this machine change quite often and a Dynamic DNS service is used. This result in low avalability of this domain. Anyway, this local (for me) webserver and domain is great to quickly publish documents, study some web security issues and test website before they are uploaded to a professional / dedicated hosting company.
This machine has been fully reinstalled with Fedora 8 code named Werewolf when it was released (Nov. 2007). Note that despite a really high end hardware configution :
- Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz
- 4 GB RAM (2x 2 GB DDR2-800)
- 1 TB S-ATA II Western Digital HD (2 x 500 MB for RAID purpose)
- 2 NIC 100 Mbit (1 on the Asus P5B motherboard and 1 external on PCI bus)
- A nVidia Asus Extreme N8500GT 512 MB
- A Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1
- A Samsung WriteMaster 20x DVD
- A Samsung DVD rom IDE 16x DVD / 48x CD
The installation went straightforward ! All the hardware was recognized during install. No Windows™ driver hassle. The 2.6.23.1-49.fc8PAE kernel was used to recognize all the 4 GB memory.
Another web site, marcfrei.org, with better avalabilty contains some other stuff.
